Heat is recommended for chronic, long term ailments including muscle tightness and tension.

The effects of heat therapy include:

Mobilisations are carried out on the joints of the body and are simply explained by gliding one joint surface on another. They are used for treatment of functional joint blocks (stiffness) which are painful and restrict mobility. The purpose of the treatment is to restore joint freedom and therefore improve the movements of the particular joint.

Manipulations are a higher grade of mobilisation whereby a ‘clicking’ or ‘popping’ noise can be heard. It can be a highly effective treatment approach, particularly in the relief and prevention of back and neck pain.

Inter-ferential Therapy uses medium frequency currents that pass through soft tissue simultaneously and literally ‘interfere’ with each other. This interference gives rise to peripheral nerves being stimulated. Its clinical applications include pain relief, muscle stimulation, increased local blood flow and reduction of oedema.

Ultrasound is a method of stimulating tissue up to 5" beneath the skins surface using sound waves. Ultrasound enhances the recovery and repair rate of damaged tissue by increasing the blood flow, reducing swelling and oedema and gently massaging the muscles, tendons or ligaments in the affected area. Ultrasound speeds up the healing process.

Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practised in China and other eastern countries for thousands of years. It is now an integral part of the rapid growth of complimentary therapy in the UK. The relatively painless insertion of ultra-fine single-use sterile needles provokes a fascinating healing response by the human body.

Eastern therapists believe that the body consists of equal and opposite qualities - Yin and Yang - and when these become unbalanced, illness or injury can result.

Western medicine has since clinically proven that acupuncture can increase the rate of healing, provide pain relief and reduce muscle spasm.

Home Exercise Programme it is important to understand that in many cases physiotherapy alone is not enough to treat a condition. Often, a home exercise plan ranging from 2 to 20 minutes per day is given to enhance the recovery process.
